Asked & Answered: Three reasons to sign up for E&O Cyber Guard today

Why should I sign up for E&O Cyber Guard?
Think of your business as a house. You’d never leave the front door wide open, would you? Yet, millions of businesses leave the online equivalents of their door or window open every day, but they can be much harder to spot for the untrained eye. A reused password, an unsecured device, outdated software, weak security settings, or information exposed in a data breach are all open invitations for an attacker to walk right in and help themselves to your client data as well as your own personal information.
Cybercriminals do not need to find or choose your business specifically. They use automated tools to scan huge numbers of systems for weaknesses, with cybercriminals openly advertising the data they’ve stolen on virtual bulletin boards on what’s called the dark web. Canadian real estate agents and brokerages are especially attractive targets because they rely heavily on email, hold sensitive client information, and help manage high-value transactions.
The risks are closer to home than many businesses realize. British Columbia records 423 police-reported cybercrimes per 100,000 people, around twice the national rate. Across Canada, 73% of small businesses have experienced a cyber incident.
Protection focused on the needs of real estate agents and brokerages of all sizes
E&O Cyber Guard gives BC real estate agents and brokerages a comprehensive set of tools and the support needed to reduce these risks, and they’re all included with your existing E&O coverage. Depending on your business setup, you’ll receive access to the 24/7 Cyber Helpline through either:
Cyber Xpert – designed for individual agents and smaller brokerages; or
Breach Defence – designed to protect medium to large-sized brokerages.
But this protection is only available if you take the 5 – 10 minutes to register.
Here are three reasons to activate your E&O Cyber Guard subscription today.
1. Get expert support, guidance and reassurance when something goes wrong
One of the challenges with cybercrime is that it can be difficult to identify that you are about to – or maybe already have! – become a victim. If something does not look right, E&O Cyber Guard gives registered real estate agents and brokerages access to a real cybersecurity expert, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You might have received a suspicious email, a colleague in the office may have accidentally clicked on a malicious link they thought was a message from their bank, or the managing broker may have noticed unusual activity on an account. You may be worried about a scam, suspect that a device has been compromised, or need help recovering an account or responding to a ransomware event.
There’s no “Please call us back during our regular business hours,” this service connects you to a cybersecurity expert right away, who will help you and provide you with specific instructions on how to determine if you’ve been victimized, and what you can do to minimize the damage.
You do not need to be certain that a cyberattack has taken place before calling. Sometimes, you simply need reassurance from an expert to check the situation and tell you whether there is anything to worry about.
2. Find and fix weaknesses before a cybercriminal does
Individual real estate agents and smaller brokerages using Cyber Xpert can monitor assets including email addresses, devices, credit cards and mobile numbers. If related information appears in a known data breach or on the dark web, Cyber Xpert can alert the user so they can act quickly.
Larger brokerages using Breach Defence can also scan registered domains and IP addresses for potential security weaknesses. This can help find the digital equivalent of an open door and address it before an attacker takes advantage.
An early warning can prevent a small weakness from becoming a serious incident. With access to an email account or business system, a cybercriminal could read confidential messages, impersonate a real estate professional, or send fraudulent payment instructions during a transaction. Finding cyber weaknesses early is critical to protecting your clients and your reputation.
3. Understand your risks and learn how to reduce them
Once you register, Cyber Xpert users begin with a vulnerability scan and a straightforward online assessment of your digital environment. This produces a cyberrisk score and recommendations for specific actions such as updating software, changing passwords, and scrubbing old devices, so users can focus on the items that are most relevant to them.
Brokerages using Breach Defence have the ability to assign security awareness training sessions (provided through E&O Cyber Guard) to employees and run simulated phishing campaigns as a follow-up to the training. Employees can practice spotting suspicious messages in a safe environment, while the brokerage can see where further training may be needed.
Even if you don’t have dedicated cyber expertise within your business, E&O Cyber Guard helps make cybersecurity manageable. Left unattended, a cybersecurity weakness may well lead to a break-in at your house/business and cost your business not only financially but also damage your hard-earned reputation in the industry.
